7.    Getting to know the locals

Spend some time at a Zulu cultural village, admire the intricate beadwork, metal neck rings and unique geometric mural art of the Ndebele people; enjoy the hospitality of a South African farm.

The Mother City is bidding to be World Design Capital in 2014. This prestigious status is designated every two years by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) to cities that are dedicated to using design for social, cultural and economic development.

From the World Design Capital website: “With more than half the world’s population now living in urban areas, design has become an increasingly fundamental tool to make cities more competitive, attractive, liveable and efficient. The World Design Capital designation is a city promotion project that celebrates the accomplishments of cities that have used design as a tool to reinvent themselves and improve social, cultural and economic life.”

Being the World Design Capital will give Cape Town a chance to showcase its achievements through a year-long program of design-led events and activities.
